How to choose a wedding photographer in Ireland

Photography is where couples most often regret going cheap, and where the difference between €1,800 and €3,500 is genuinely visible.

The styles

Documentary. Unposed, story-led, minimal direction. Now the dominant style in Ireland. Best if you hate posing; requires trust.

Fine art. Light, editorial, carefully composed. Beautiful, slower, needs more of your day.

Traditional. Structured group shots and portraits. Your parents will be delighted. Allow 45 minutes after the ceremony.

Editorial hybrid. Documentary coverage with a directed portrait session. What most Irish photographers actually deliver.

What things cost

  • €1,200–€1,800: newer photographers, eight hours, single shooter
  • €1,800–€2,600: the bulk of the established market, full day, 500–700 images
  • €2,600–€4,000: in-demand names, second shooter, albums included

The one request that matters

Ask to see two complete weddings from start to finish, not a highlights reel. Anyone can produce twenty good photographs. You are buying the other six hundred. The speeches, the aunt at the bar, the bad light in the church.

Look specifically at:

  • Indoor church shots in poor light
  • Group photographs, are people blinking, is the framing tidy?
  • The dance floor after dark
  • A wedding at the same venue as yours, if they have one

Questions worth asking

  • How many hours, and does coverage run to the first dance?
  • Second shooter included or extra?
  • How many edited images, and delivered how quickly? Six to ten weeks is standard.
  • What is your backup gear and backup photographer plan?
  • Are you insured for public liability? Some venues require proof.
  • Do you hold the images if the balance is late? (Ask. It happens.)

Meet them, or at least video call. You will spend more of your wedding day with your photographer than with almost any guest.

Booking

Twelve to eighteen months for summer Saturdays. Off-peak, three months is often fine.
