At the lower end, O'Carrolls Cakes in Killarney lists three-tier cakes from €225 to €450, where the price depends on how many tiers are real cake and how many are decorative dummy tiers.
What sets the price
- Servings. The number of guests the cake has to feed sets its size. A three-tier cake can serve anything from 70 to 160 depending on the tier sizes.
- Finish. Fondant usually costs more than buttercream. Foxy Bakes, for example, lists the same 85-serving three-tier cake at €500 in buttercream and €610 in fondant.
- Decoration. Hand-made sugar flowers and intricate detail are extra on almost every price list.
- Real or dummy tiers. A dummy tier looks the same but is not cake, which cuts the price. Pair it with a plain cutting cake in the kitchen if you need more portions.
Delivery and set-up
Most cake makers charge separately to deliver and set up the cake at the venue. CAKED, for example, publishes fees from €50 to €140 depending on the venue. Ask for the delivery cost when you get your quote, so it does not arrive as a surprise.
Where to save
- Size the cake for the guests who will actually eat it. Many couples serve it with evening tea and coffee, when not everyone wants a slice.
- Use a dummy tier for height and a kitchen cutting cake for portions.
- Choose buttercream over fondant, and fresh flowers from your florist over sugar flowers.
- Some couples swap a tall cake for a dessert table, which can cost the same or less.
