How much does a wedding celebrant cost in Ireland?

A wedding celebrant in Ireland typically costs €400 to €900. The Humanist Association of Ireland gives a guideline fee of €450 to €600, plus a €90 contribution to the association, and individual celebrants publish fees in that range. Travel, and VAT for some celebrants, can add to it.

The HAI contribution is paid when you book and is separate from any deposit the celebrant asks for. Some celebrants are registered for VAT and must add 23% to their fee, so check whether a quote includes it.

Legally married, or a ceremony only?

This matters more than the price. Only a registered solemniser can legally marry you. Humanist celebrants accredited by the HAI are registered solemnisers. Some independent celebrants are not, which means a beautiful ceremony but not a legal marriage, and you would need to marry separately at a registry office.

Ask every celebrant: "Are you on the register of solemnisers?" Whichever you choose, you still give the state three months' notice and pay the €200 notification fee. See how to legally get married in Ireland.

How it compares

  • Civil ceremony. A registrar marries you at a registry office or approved venue, Monday to Friday only. There is no celebrant fee, though there is an extra fee for a venue other than a registry office.
  • Church ceremony. Many couples make a donation to the church and pay for the organist or choir separately.
  • Celebrant. A personal, written-for-you ceremony, on any day of the week, at a venue open to the public.

What sets the price

  • Travel. Celebrants often charge travel and sometimes accommodation for venues far from their base.
  • Meetings and writing. Most fees include meetings with you and writing the ceremony. Ask how many meetings are included.
  • Rehearsal. Some include a rehearsal, others charge for it.
  • VAT. Larger celebrant businesses add 23%.

Questions to ask

  • Are you a registered solemniser, so we are legally married on the day?
  • What does your fee include, and is VAT on top?
  • Do you charge travel or accommodation for our venue?
  • How many meetings, and is a rehearsal included?
