After the band, or all night?
Irish weddings book a DJ in one of two ways:
- After the band. The band plays its sets and the DJ takes over until the end of the night. This is the shorter, cheaper booking.
- DJ only. The DJ plays the whole evening, often starting with the first dance. More hours, more cost, but no band fee.
A full-day booking adds music for the ceremony and drinks reception, and often MC duties to keep the day on time.
What sets the price
- Hours. An after-band set costs less than the whole evening, and a full day costs most.
- Extras. Live sax, percussion, a silent disco or extra lighting all add to the bill.
- Travel. Many DJs include travel within their area and charge beyond it.
- Day and season. Summer Saturdays book out first and cost the most.
Questions to ask before you book
- What time do you start and finish, and what does an extra hour cost?
- Is lighting included, and do you bring your own sound system?
- Will you take requests, and can we give you a do-not-play list?
- Will you act as MC and handle announcements?
- Do you carry public liability insurance? Most venues require it.
DJ or band?
A band brings live energy, and a DJ plays the exact songs you love. The survey average spend on a wedding band is €2,833, well above the published DJ prices above, so a DJ-only evening is usually the cheaper route. Many couples book both: the band for the main sets, the DJ to finish the night. See what a wedding band costs in Ireland.
